When public safety agencies begin planning for an upgraded communications system, one of the first decisions is to determine what technology best supports their operations. For agencies considering P25, it is important to understand exactly what P25 is, and what it is not.

P25 is an open public safety communications standard, not a product or technology owned by any single manufacturer. That gives agencies the opportunity to evaluate solutions from multiple proven manufacturers and build a system around their specific coverage, functionality, and budget requirements. At GenComm, our role is to help identify and design the solution that best fits every customer’s needs, not to force them into the same product ecosystem.

P25 is a Standard

Project 25, also known as P25 or APCO 25, is an open standard that supports reliable, interoperable digital communications for public safety organizations. Although the manufacturer of your current system may be well known for manufacturing P25-compatible equipment, it is important to understand that there are other proven manufacturers capable of exceeding your expectations.

For agencies planning their next communications system, understanding that P25 is an open standard can open the door to more options and more control over the future of their systems.

P25 Is Bigger Than Any One Brand

Not every P25 product is identical and every manufacturer does not offer the same capabilities. Coverage requirements, system design, features, support and compatibility can all vary. The point is that an agency does not have to assume that P25 automatically means one particular brand.

The conversation can begin with this important question: What does your agency actually need?

The Right System Starts with the Right Requirements

Every public safety organization operates differently.

GenComm works with multiple high-quality manufacturers and evaluates the technology that best fits the agency’s coverage, functionality, operational requirements and budget. For one agency, a L3Harris solution may be the right fit. For another, equipment from Kenwood, EFJohnson or Tait may provide the capabilities they need.

Our customers should pay for the capabilities they actually need, rather than automatically paying for a particular nameplate.

Maintaining Options for the Future

Agencies may add radios, infrastructure, software, applications and other components as a communications system grows. When too much of that system becomes dependent on one manufacturer’s proprietary products, software or interfaces, future upgrades or replacements may offer fewer competitive options.

Vendor lock-in is not necessarily the result of a bad decision, and there are situations where a single manufacturer’s ecosystem may make sense for an organization. However, agencies should understand the long-term implications of their technology choices before committing to them.

Alternative Does Not Mean Compromise

Reliability, interoperability, coverage, and security are essential in critical environments. Police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel and other public safety professionals depend on their communications systems when every second matters.

Evaluating alternatives does not mean sacrificing mission-critical requirements. It means recognizing that multiple manufacturers can provide proven P25 solutions and taking the time to determine which one is the best fit for the agency.

A lower price does not automatically mean better value. Likewise, the most expensive solution is not automatically the best solution for every organization.

The right system is the one that meets the agency’s operational needs, provides dependable performance and makes sense for current and future requirements.

Helping You Evaluate the Entire Picture

GenComm serves as the connection between our customers and the available technology. Our team helps agencies evaluate multiple proven product lines and build a solution around their specific needs, rather than simply advocating for one manufacturer.

That approach allows us to focus on what matters most: providing the right technology, at a fair price, with the customer’s best interests in mind.

When communication is mission-critical, the goal should not be to sell the same system to every agency.

Before assuming your next P25 system has to come from the same manufacturer you have always used, take the time to understand the standard, define your requirements and evaluate options.

GenComm can help you look at the entire picture and find the solution that makes the most sense for your agency. Contact us to start the conversation about your P25 communications needs.
