Adam Fischer is a Project Manager at GenComm, bringing more than two decades of experience in civil engineering and telecommunications design to his role. Before joining GenComm, Adam spent 21 years at a civil engineering firm, where he specialized in CAD drafting, civil engineering and telecom designs, site inspections, land surveying, and project management. We sat down with Adam to learn more about his career, his experience in the telecommunications field, what he enjoys about working at GenComm, and more.
What brought you to GenComm? What do you enjoy most about working at GenComm?
GenComm was a previous client I had managed and I established a great relationship with them. What I enjoy most about working here is the variety and diversity of projects we deal with and the challenges that come along with it. What’s rewarding are the skills and services I brought along that we can now offer. I bring a unique set of skills and services to the table which strengthens our ability to be the turnkey vendor when it comes to site development, not just radio system implantation. We handle all our own civil design services in-house and that is rewarding.
What does a typical day for you look like?
Typical mornings start with coffee, dropping kids off where they need to be and commuting to work. When I arrive at the office, I check emails, coordinate and respond accordingly, and attend weekly meetings. While doing so, I’m typically in CAD software drawing up designs, putting proposals together and solicitating bids and quotes from contractors and vendors and coordinating field work with contractors.
How did you get into flying drones? How does this help you serve customers better?
I’ve been a FAA Section 107 licensed drone pilot for over 8 years and have flown hundreds of projects for a wide variety of services. I initially got my FAA license to use drone data collection for land surveying and telecom tower inspections. This led to 3D modeling using aerial data to developing UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) services for the previous firm I had worked for. At GenComm, I use our aircraft for tower mapping and inventories along with microwave path verification. The benefit of doing this in-house is we can now get survey grade data instantly to assist our RF designers with quick turnaround.
What do you enjoy most about working in the Madison area?
I live about 45 minutes north of Madison but have worked in the area for over 20 years now. The area is beautiful and I’m blessed to live, work and to create a family here. I live at the base of the Baraboo Bluffs and it’s such a great location to raise a family. We live out in the county but have the convenience of the city only minutes away.
What are you most passionate about at work?
Designing systems, being hands-on with projects and seeing the project come to fruition and completion.
What activities do you enjoy in your spare time?
Our family loves the outdoors. We live on Lake Wisconsin, so we spend a great deal of time fishing and playing on the water with friends and family. If we are not on our local waters, we spend the summer camping and fishing throughout the state.
