Cyber Security Awareness Month: Importance of Secure Communication

National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, recognizing the importance of protecting the systems, information, and technology we rely on every day. Cybersecurity is important for public safety organizations because communication systems are essential to keeping first responders connected and communities safe.

Cyber threats continue to evolve, and new technologies give cybercriminals additional ways to identify and exploit vulnerabilities. While cybersecurity often brings computers, networks, and data to mind, secure communication systems are an important part of an organization’s overall security strategy.

Communication Is Critical to Public Safety

During an emergency, first responders need to communicate quickly and reliably. Police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, dispatchers, and other public safety professionals depend on communication systems to share information and make critical decisions.

Disruption to those communications can create serious challenges. That is why public safety organizations should consider the security and reliability of their communication infrastructure as part of their broader cybersecurity and emergency preparations.

Modern radio systems can incorporate security features such as encryption to help protect sensitive communications from unauthorized access. Maintaining secure systems also means keeping equipment and infrastructure properly supported, addressing vulnerabilities, and having plans in place for potential system disruptions.

Building a More Secure Communication System

Cybersecurity requires ongoing attention to the systems an organization uses and the processes it has in place when something goes wrong.

For public safety organizations, that can include evaluating communication equipment and infrastructure, maintaining current systems, protecting sensitive information, backing up important data and developing an incident response plan. Organizations should also understand how their communication systems can continue operating if another part of their technology infrastructure experiences an outage or disruption.

GenComm understands the importance of reliable communication for public safety organizations. For more than 50 years, we have helped organizations design, integrate, install, and support communication systems, including two-way radios, dispatch consoles, and other public safety communication solutions.
